Cool Stuff Made From Hot Steel : Forging a Lifetime of Memories

Unique metal work using relearned old world crafts.  Really I just heat up metal in my garage while drinking beer.  The result is cool stuff that is useful.... for the most part.... Honestly I put a lot of research into making a bottle opener out of a horseshoe...... I did mention drinking beer while heating up metal....

I hope you like my stuff.  Its my passion to make art that is useful that people really enjoy..... The beer is just a side benefit...

 Welcome to Memorial Steel

A Subsidiary of Twisted Steel Blacksmithing

Let Memorial Steel help you forge the memories of your lost loved ones into items that will last forever.

The purpose of Memorial Steel is simple. We want to provide a unique way to memorialize a loved one, so we have two ways that we can help.

Memorial Damascus Steel:

We can take your loved ones’ ashes, hair or other biological materials and have them forged into steel to last a lifetime. You can now keep your loved one close to you forever.

Our Process:

  • We ask for a small sample of ashes, hair or other materials

  • If your loved one has any small items of high carbon (not stainless) steel, such as tools, collar rings, harness hardware etc., we ask for these as they may be able to be used

  • Your items are melted and turned into Damascus steel. For this process,

    • We start by making a mild steel canister.

    • We spray the inside of the canister with high temp white paint.   It contains titanium oxide which will prevent the high carbon steel from welding to the mild steel canister.

    • We add old bits of Damascus and your high carbon steel (if available)to the canister which, will add some character and contrast to the steel.

    • We then add powdered steel to the canister and a small amount of ashes. Approximately 1 teaspoon.

    • We seal the canister up with a small square piece of steel and weld the canister shut.   We then heat the canister to over 2000F and hold it at that temperature for 45 minutes.

    • Then we crush the canister and forge weld the contents into a solid bar of steel.  Then once it has cooled we remove the mild steel canister and forge the knife from the solid high carbon steel bar we formed.

  • We take the Damascus steel and turn it into a new item of your choosing (pendants, knives, medallions, etc. —> rings coming soon!)

  • We will do this for a lost family member, friend, or pet

  • We charge $250 to make your Damascus, plus a charge to make your memorial item. The charge to make your memorial piece will depend on what is selected. Our price range will be $150-$600 depending on the piece. Most knives fall in the $300 range, and smaller items fall into the $150-$350 range.

Memorial Grave Markers and Plaques:

This idea came from a client request. Many times when a loved one is laid to rest, it can take some time for a headstone to be arranged and placed. We can offer a service to have a blacksmithed grave marker or plaque created to memorialize your lost loved one.

  • We can offer a service where we do all of the work to create your marker, or we can start the work and complete it with you in a class.

  • Markers made by us completely are $250

  • Classes for working on markers with us are $200 per person

  • We can take up to 4 people in a class

  • If you have a class of 2 or more, your marker or plaque is include with your class

  • If you have a single person class, we charge $200 for the class, and $150 for your marker or plaque

  • Classes are 2-3 hours, and can be held in an evening.
